The lodge, nestled in the rocky Aus Mountains, is famed for its extensive and lovely vistas, best seen from one of the mountain bike or hiking trails, a viewpoint above the Klein-Aus Vista campsite or from the secluded Eagle's Nest Chalets. Contributing to the scenery, the Wild Horses of the Namib remind us of untethered freedom and appeal to our soul to embrace the wonderful adventure of life in its entirety.

Desert Horse Inn is imbued with the energy of the horses, adding a spirited component to the warmth of the family-owned lodge. As the pastel landscape transforms into desert en route to Lüderitz and the coast, there is the abandoned diamond mining town of Kolmanskop to visit where disintegrating houses are a photographer's playground, a desert town to discover and fascinating promontories to explore. For the more adventurous we recommend our Rustic Geisterschlucht Cabin.

Accommodation - Desert Horse Inn

The attractive and airy rooms are built in a style indicative of the late century farmhouse and painted a deep, rich sienna that glows alluringly in the late afternoon sunshine. Put up feet on your veranda enjoying Klein-Aus calm, relax at the pool side, designed in a unique horse shoe shape. For the active ones: partake in the scenic drives or explore the numerous mountain-bike and walking trails traversing the rocky hills. En-route you will discover WWI ramparts, and an old Hudson motorcar riddled with bullet holes from an almost-forgotten shoot-out with diamond smugglers, viewpoints with extraordinary vistas, springbok and oryx on the plains and, if lucky, klipspringers poised on the rocky slopes. For a day excursion, visit the wild horses at the Garub waterhole, 20km to the West, and the old diamond mining town of Kolmanskop and Lüderitz, 100km away. Return in the afternoon to Klein-Aus peace. Relax with sundowners on the restaurant veranda or wooden deck watching the sun disappearing behind the mountain slopes, before enjoying a 3-course meal in the restaurant. Exchange travel experiences and recommendations at the Wild Horse Bar or at the cosy fireplace in the lounge before returning to your room for a good night's sleep and the anticipation of a new day.

Desert Horse Campsite

Desert Horse Campsite at Klein-Aus Vista is a magical campsite. It will call you back again like an echo. Resting in an amphitheatre of rock, it is a hideaway that evokes the feeling of wilderness although only a 2 kilometer-drive from Desert Horse Inn. The sites are positioned under giant camelthorn trees, some adorned with sociable weaver nests. Here bird, tree and sky exchange stories. Klein-Aus is renowned for this vista. You will remember these sunsets. As prime spot in the area, Desert Horse Campsite provides an ideal base to explore the south-western corner of Namibia.

Here, wild horses of the Namib roam, desert sand blows through old diamond towns, the stars twinkle in your dreams and nearby Lüderitz holds century-old dreams. At Klein-Aus Vista, camping pleasures are enjoyed to the full. Each of the ten sites is equipped with a tap, table with benches, grill and windbreak. We offer hot-water showers and flush toilets while the courtesy of Mother Nature provides space and grace. Note that there are no power point outlet at the Desert Horse camp. If you have equipment that need to be charged, it can be done at the reception of Desert Horse Inn. Barbecue packs are also available at the reception of Desert Horse Inn (1.5 km); those who like to skip cooking for a change are more than welcome at the Inn's restaurant (subject to availability, please enquire upon arrival). Several hiking trails run through the valley; the Vista Trail leads to a lookout point where you can watch the sun disappear behind the distant horizon at the far end of vast desert plains. There's nothing quite like the simple pleasures: camaraderie around the campfire and the enchantment of a star-studded heaven rich in myths. On nights when the moon is a slender curve, look up at Orion's belt; find the Southern Cross and wonder. Feel the invigorating energy of the wild spaces of Namibia. Enter its peace.

Accommodation - Eagle's Nest Chalets

Rediscover freedom at Klein-Aus Vista with its sweeping vistas of subtle colours where the Pro-Namib merges with desert sands. Take time away from rush and routine of everyday life to recharge and to reconnect with the natural world. For a quality experience, treat yourself to a few days at the Eagle's Nest Chalets, built into rounded granite boulders with a rugged granite-gneiss mountain as a backdrop. Above, eagles may soar, and in front, the expansive views will take your breath away. A seven-kilometre drive from the main lodge, the Eagle's Nest chalets are private self-catering retreats, each built individually, combining natural elements and boulders into their interiors in a rustic and luxurious blend.

You may just want to stay here forever. Choose whether to cook in the kitchen, on the fire or to eat in the Desert Horse Inn restaurant; take-away breakfast or barbecue packs are available on request. Eagle's Nest is an attractive base for those who appreciate boundless space, choices, a sense of the land, privacy, innovation, the out-of-the-ordinary and the spectacular. The Eagle's Nest chalets have been built especially for you.

'Geisterschlucht' Cabin

There is a touch of magic and intrigue at this rustic 'Ghost Canyon' cabin. Simplistic but exclusive as it hides in a secluded valley, where a rusty bullet-ridden Hudson greets you at the entrance road, a relic from a gunfight between diamond smugglers and police. Their ghosts are said to roam the valley in search of their lost diamonds. Further along the trail, a series of stone ramparts are visible from WWI days (1914-18), from when the German forces built fortifications here in the Aus hills to make a stand against the South African Union soldiers.

The Geisterschlucht Cabin consists of two family rooms sharing a bathroom, kitchen and lounge area. Solar panels that charge batteries provide 220 volt light and outlets to charge devices but please note no hair dryer and electric kettle can be used. The two rooms each have two ¾ beds and one bunk bed each, sleeping a total of 4 persons per room with bedding provided. The bathroom has two organic toilets and two showers. The open plan kitchen and lounge area is equipped with a fridge/gas burner and an inside braai (barbecue) area with cutlery, crockery, pots and pans provided. There is also an outside braai area to enjoy pleasant evenings around the fire.

Guests are more than welcome at the Inn's restaurant for breakfast or dinner (subject to availability, please enquire upon arrival). A better option are the barbecue packs which can be ordered at the reception (Desert Horse Inn, 6 km). Two hiking trails run through the picturesque valley and the habitat of the Wild Horses is just 20 km away.

Please note: During some periods of the year, the cabin may only be accessible with a 4x4. Please enquire when making your reservation. There is a minimum charge when making a booking
